Stripping should only be done if there is a medical reason like 42 full weeks, or rising blood pressure, or a very big baby, no water, etc. In severe cases of maternal anxiety, when a woman is going absolutely nuts, it might be done also, if she really wants it badly. I have done it many times in the 22 years of midwifery, and IT DOESN'T HAVE TO HURT, JUST MINOR DISCOMFORT. It needs to be done only after explaining, consent, and very slowly and gently, and you need to have one finger dilation in order to get a finger in and sweep it around in the cervix between the membrane sac and the cervix. I tell the woman to breathe and relax and to tell me if she needs me to stop and she needs to rest. The secret is "slow and gentle" and to really stop when the woman asks. It can be quite effective sometimes in starting labor, but sometimes doesn't work either. Never do it during a contraction and with caution so the water won't break. It causes loosening of the mucous plug and discharge with blood usually for a day or two.
