There are no clear answers to this tragedy. At first it seemed like crib death or SIDS. After about 10 days, more results came back from the autopsy that pointed to a very rare type of pneumonia, that can only be diagnosed by a chest X-ray, and presents with no real sypmtoms, and the pathologist assured the parents that it would not have been discovered in the hospital either, as chest X-rays are only done when a baby seems ill. An excellent neonatologist examined the baby that evening, and listened to her lungs, and found nothing wrong. The baby even nursed well before she died. It came on very suddenly and with no signs. There is no reason to put any blame on the doctor. Some things are not in our control, and bad outcomes are not always a result of negligence or fault of anyone or place of birth. Sometimes bad things just happen to wonderful and very innocent people and there is no explanation. In our advanced and high-tech society we demand answers and explanations and it is so hard for us to accept such a loss. I myself am still trying to cope. We midwives are so used to the joy of birth, and when the pain of death occurs we suffer the shock of loss. The parents are very spiritual people and in touch with their feelings and nature, and my heart goes out to them. We are still waiting to hear more from the pathology department as to the exact cause of the pneumonia, if this can ever be determined.
