Dear Michaela, I hope that you have read all about homebirth and the safety of homebirth on this website. The question that really needs to be asked is: is hospital birth safe? All of the research from all over the modern world proves that outcomes in homebirths with trained midwives and low-risk women in close proximaty to hospital, are either the same as hospital outcomes or even better.
Complications in natural births are very low when you are dealing with healthy women and normal pregnancies. If you will look at my statistics you will also note a very low rate of transfer to hospital. People think that most complications in birth happen from minute to minute. This is not so. There is usually plenty of time to transfer to hospital before things become emergencies. People think that birth is dangerous because of all the problems we hear about with hospital births that are usually a result of all the aggressive interventions that are usually not necessary to begin with. However to answer your question "what do you do when there is a complication": the midwife gives immediate first aid and transfers to the nearest hospital either by car or ambulance depending on the situation. For example: if a women began to bleed heavily after birth, the midwife would give her a shot of Pitocin to stop the bleeding and then put in an IV and transfer to hospital. Israel is very good with emergency medicine and Magen David Adom is very expert. Transfers are very rare and you need to see the overall statistical picture comparing safety outcomes for mother and babies born at home and in hospital. Then you can only understand why homebirth is a safe option for healthy natural birth.
