In the Literature Interpregnancy Intervals and Pregnancy Outcomes
Researchers recently published a series of articles confirming that a short interval between pregnancies is associated with small size for gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth.
Zhu BP, Rolfs RT, Nangle BE, Horan JM. Effect of the interval between pregnancies on perinatal outcomes. N Engl J Med 1999; 340(8): 589-94
Zhu examined birth certificates of over 173,000 singleton infants born in Utah, controlling for a variety of socio-demographic and biological variables. He found that infants conceived 18 to 23 months after a previous live birth had fewer adverse outcomes. Infants conceived less than 6 months or more than 5 years after a previous birth faced greater risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, and SGA.
