Assertiveness and the delivery room - long
|

Hi,x
Unfortunately I can relate first hand that immigrant women often do not get adequate pain relief in the delivery room.. I don't know about arab women, but I HAVE heard claims such as yours before.x
I am not sure if it is a matter of "racism" or simply that most non-Israeli born women lack the assertiveness necessary and the screaming patient will be treated first.x
I myself had quite an unpleasant bout with this, since I gave birth on a Friday night and there were no doctors around.x

My best advice to you is the same advice given here to all women that want to ensure a plesant birth experience:x
- do a birth plan.x
- if it is safe for you avoid Soroka. Do some small research on how many anesthetists there are around the delivery ward, day and night. Choose your birth wardx
- discuss your wishes with your midwife when you enter the room.x
- do a good birth preparation so you are not tempted to accept drugs offered before your epidural. They might give you no relief and turn you into a "nice" patient - that is what they did to me.x
- If she says something dismissive such, as "you are doing well", ask her at which point the epidural can be given. It is important to get it at the right time. When you are close to this point demand that the preparations be made. They need to start an IV or you can't get the epidural, and this takes time.x
- Once you are at this point, never wait two hours. Ask gently about your epidural to any doctor or nurse in the room. Ask what the anesthetist is doing and when can he come to you. This is what an assertive Israeli couple would do.x
Good luck and have a nice, easy birth.x
