I know personally of many cases that the newspapers have totally distorted the truth for the scoop. You all need to stop believing that the monitor is the answer to a safe birth, because it isn't. I worked for about 17 years in hospital delivery rooms, where monitors were common practice. Sometimes the monitor looked so terrible and we rushed for a Cesarian operation, ready to do a full resuscitation on a nearly dead baby,only to pull out a pink and screaming baby with an apgar of 10. Then there were instances when the monitor seemed ok, and we were shocked to birth a baby that wouldn't breathe with a very low apgar, and we needed to call the pediatricians and do a resuscitation and then the baby was in intensive care. Shit happens even in the best delivery rooms with the latest state of the art birth technology and can also happen in a homebirth with skilled midwives. No one is usually at fault. It is not likely that there was any negligence at all here, as you all know that doctors are all scared to death of being sued and if there is any doubt at all they run for the knife and do a Cesarian, most of the time unecessarily, just to avoid a potential lawsuit. The rate of Cesarian in Israel has been steadily rising, without an decrease in babies dying or being brain damaged. Nearly one in 4 women now are having their babies cut out of them instead of birthing vaginally. This is mainly due to the practice of defensive medicine, and not for medical reasons. So I don't buy the story at all of the doctors neglecting this woman or not acting fast enough or being lazy and tired. I believe that the monitor was not so bad and certainly not clear cut, and they wanted to give this woman a chance to birth normally. Somtimes the plan doesn't work. It is a terrible tragedy, but to blame the hospital and to name the doctors in the newspapers before there are results of an investigation is unjust and wrong. These three doctors careers can be ruined just to feed the public's need to find a reason and put the blame somehwere for something that might be nobodies fault at all. Lis is as good a hospital as any and today there is a tragedy in Lis, tomorrow in Beilinson, and next week in Meir, and next month at a homebirth. Let's keep things in proportion and know that birth is mostly safe but nothing in life is 100% and we cannot control everything.
