Someone more radical than me, and a kindred spirit. To answer responders questions...the research shows that there are more anal sphincter tears with episiotomies than without or else there is no corrolation between episotomy and severe tear of anus. Oddly enough obesity and first baby over age 35 and over 4 kilo does raise the chances of an anal tear. The only emergency that I could think of would be severe fetal distress, so I'm sure that the midwife or doctor would explain this and then you could approve. Unfortunately, most episiotomies are not done for this reason but for fear of your tearing, doctor being angry with midwife, just plain bad habits and not being up to date with research. Very strange that you have to sign consent form for using jacuzi, getting epidural, having CS, but not for episiotomy which is a real surgical procedure. When women start sueing that's when doctors start listening. But where is the limit. How about suing for unnecessary Cesarian sections or instrumental deliveries. Interesting idea, very provocative, food for thought.
