Hi Zulu, I have lots of experience with women who have left early. As soon as you feel good and want to leave the hospital, which may be from 3-12 hours, you need to go to the nurses station and tell them that you want to leave and will sign yourself out. Then you need to go to the baby nursery and tell them you are leaving and want to discharge the baby. In both instances you will need to be very assertive, as the doctor will come around ( you may have to wait until he is available), and he will tell you all kinds of horror stories that can happen to you , like severe bleeding, infection, and for the baby, jaundice, dehydration, infection, and many other possibilities. They will do their best to cover their asses and undermine your ability to be a good parent and responsible mother. The magic word is: thank you for your advice, I hear you, and I will take full responsibility for my early discharge by signing a release form that I am leaving on my own free will against medical advice. This makes them feel better as they are afraid of being sued. However, if you leave early, you must be responsible, like getting a PKU test on day 3, where you can do it in Tilpat Halav or come back to the hospital nursery. Good idea to have the baby looked at this time by a doctor or baby nurse to see if there is jaundice and if a bilirubin blood test is necessary. Make sure that the baby is nursing well before you leave the hospital, and if you have trouble see a lactation consultant or La Leche adviser. Check that the baby is peeing and making Kaki. Keep the baby in lots of sunlight to prevent jaundice. Nurse, nurse, nurse, and rest and eat and drink. It is a million times better at home than any hospital. Go for it!!Ilana In the worst situation that the baby has jaundice that needs treatment, he will be readmitted and you haven't lost anything.
