Hi Iris, As you may know I am a homebirth midwife, In about 320 homebirths in Israel, about 5 women (all first births) decided that they just couldn't take the pain or didn't want to deal with it. So they went to the hospital for an epidural. Before that I worked in Misgav Ledach and had a private practice in the homestyle birthing rooms. There about 20% of births (not only first births) who intended to do natural in the end wanted pain relief, although about half of those just took pethidine and not epidural. At home, you have more motivated for natural type of women, and there is no possibility of drugs, and the midwife is very supportive and not encouraging any drugs. In hospitals, you know that there are loads of drugs and sometimes the staff even promotes you to take an epidural, so it is harder to refuse the temptation. Labor pain is not easy but women's bodies are made to be able to take the pain, and it is much healthier for you and the baby. I find that if you have the right environment and a very supportive staff and that you are truely motivated, then you will succeed in most cases. If not, no tragedy, but you need to know the consequences and the side effects that are possible. Good luck
