It is not unusual or dangerous if your labor begins with water breaking. There are two options: one is the conventional one that says to go imediately to the hospital, where you will be examined and put on the monitor and in many places not allowed off the bed. This is to prevent the very rare complication of a prolapsed cord, which is very rare in a 39 week first pregnancy with the head down. Especially if you feel movements and the water is clear. With a prolapsed cord there will be fetal distress, probably thick meconium and no movements. It is more likely to happen with a breech,or a premature birth. Especially if you have been told that the head is engaged it is very very rare. If you go to hospital then the clock will be ticking as you are allowed only a certain amount of time to wait before given ziruz because they are afraid of infection. There are more germs in hospital than home. If you are stressed (be being in a hospital environment) then you have less chance of your labor beginning naturally. Your normal birthing hormones are affected by stress. If you get vaginal exams then you are more likely to get infections and put yourself and baby at risk. You have the option of staying home, which is what advocates of homebirth or natural birth would advise. Stay home and birth at home with a midwife and watch your hygiene, no vaginal exams or sex, take your temp. and be aware of movements and change in color of water. You have the option of staying home until contractions begin and then going to hospital, although you may be scolded for not coming right away. It's all your decision and what kind of birth you want, the natural and safe or the hospital medical model of birth with the high likelihood of an induced or accelerated birth with a monitor, epidural, and antibiotics, and the risks of all these interventions which often lead to a Cesarian Section at the end result. The hospital model is used to prevent the extremely rare complications whereas the methods used can cause many other common complications. ,
